I Am A New Christian . . . What Does God Expect Of Me?
|
That is a fair and very good question!
Here's the answer. First of all, it's important to make sure you understand what took place when you got saved. God wants you to grow in your relationship with Him. This illustration may help explain what happened when you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior: The Seed And The Dirt When you put a seed in the dirt, it will grow a tree or a plant. Dirt is just dirt. It does not know how to grow a tree, the seed knows how to grow a tree. If the seed is left on the kitchen counter, it will not grow. A seed left on top of the dirt will not grow. The dirt must receive the seed. The two work together in a marvelous way. The seed grows and the dirt provides a place for it to grow. Jesus is like the seed. He knows how to make a new person in us, we do not. We are like the dirt. All we need is to receive the seed and let Him grow in us. It is amazing to watch the changes that happen to a person who receives Christ as their Savior. Now you are a child of God and it is important for to get involved in a Bible-believing church. The Independent Baptist Church is often the closest to the New Testament church model given in the Bible. Of course their are good ones and bad ones in many different denominations, so ask God to guide you. Our pastor would be glad to answer any questions you may have as you grow in God's family. NEXT . . . GET BUSY SERVING GOD NOW! Once you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, you become a child of God (John 1:12 and 3:1-7). Welcome to the greatest family in the universe! But, God didn't save you just so you can occupy a church pew. GET BUSY! There are several things you should do NOW, five in fact, that will help you grow into mature Christian that God wants you to be: 1) Read your Bible even if you don't understand it all. Babies don't digest everything they eat either, but you will get some of it. 1 Peter 2:2 says - As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: We use the King James Bible. The entire Bible can be read in about 60 hours. The more times you read it, the more you will understand it. There are about 20 Old English words we don't use today that you'll need to study, but then it is easy. 2) Find a church that teaches and believes the Bible is the Word of God and ask the pastor to be baptized, showing others you have been saved. It is an act of obedience to God. Baptism itself has no saving power. It will not save you. It identifies you as a believer in Christ. Baptism, in the Bible, always takes place after salvation and is always by immersion (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Acts 8:38). Baptism is a public symbol of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It's like a wedding ring. It's an outward sign to others that you belong to Christ and an inward change in you. Ask if there is a Discipleship Program available so that you can grow and get grounded in God's Word. Being faithful in attending your church is crucial! (Heb. 10:25). Don't be a hit or miss Christian. 3) Tell others how they too can go to heaven. It's called being a witness for the Lord. Just tell them what Jesus did for you. This too, is a command (Mark 16:15). It's like a beggar telling another beggar where he found bread. And Jesus Christ is that bread, the Bread of life! (John 6:35). 4) Start supporting the work of God with your time, talents and money. Ask your pastor how you can jump in and get involved! Start tithing. The tithe is 10% of what you gross (first fruits). What God has blessed and given you (Mal. 3:8-10 and 1 Cor. 16:2). It is also an act of obedience to God and will increase your faith. Get involved in giving to missions. Missions is always given over and above your tithe. The tithe belongs to God through the local, New Testament church. 5) Be on the the lookout. The devil is not happy that you got saved. He is the enemy of God and your enemy now. He cannot have your soul, but he will make ever effort to ruin your life and effectiveness for the Lord. The devil wants you live a defeated Christian life. God never intended us to be defeated, but victorious! Jesus not only wants to save your soul, but He also wants to help you in your walk with God (Luke 9:56). The devil or Satan as he is also called, will cause you to doubt God and influence you to sin. Satan is a deceiver and a liar (John 8:44). 2 Corinthians 2:11 says - Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. Don't get discouraged! 2Thessalonians 3:13 says - But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. You cannot lose your salvation. You are secure forever in Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:13). God will not take His salvation from you (Eph. 2:8-9). As a Christian, there will be times when you will sin against God. You're not perfect, but don't use that as an excuse to continue in sin (Rom. 6:1-2). You still have a sin nature. But, when you sin against God, you can go directly to Him in prayer and ask forgiveness of your sin because of your relationship with God through Jesus Christ you now have. He's your Heavenly Father! Tell the Lord Jesus Christ your sorry for your sin and God will forgive you. 1 John 1:9 says - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Confess to God and get going again serving Him! It's like when you learned to ride a bike. There were times where you fell off. You dusted yourself off, got back on and started going again. The same is true with a believer in Christ. It's a life-long process as you continue to grow. KEEP SERVING HIM! |
